10 Things Travel Nurses and Therapists Must Do in Boston

by CoreMedical Group

Are you a travel nurse or allied health professional headed to Boston for a contract? Congratulations! As travel recruiters, Boston is one of our favorite places to send our Travel RNs, Surg Techs, PTs, OTs, and SLPs. Why? Because Boston hosts some of the top healthcare facilities in the country, and there is so much to do in the area! Here are 10 things you must do if you’re on contract in Boston.

1.      Walk The Freedom Trail.

If you love history, you’ll love Boston’s Freedom Trail! The Freedom Trail is a city walk that takes you past every American Revolution related sight in Boston. If you do the full walk, you’ll see The USS Constitution, Old North Church, Paul Revere’s House, historic Boston Common, the site of the Boston Massacre, and so much more. The best part is that most of the sights along the trail are free or available to tour by suggested donation.

2.      Visit Fenway Park.

Even if you’re not a Red Sox fan, there is nothing quite like catching a game in Fenway Park.  Tickets can sometimes be hard to come by, especially if the New York Yankees are in town, so be sure to plan ahead.  If you’re not able to catch a baseball game, there are tours of Fenway Park on non-game days. Visit the field of dreams for Red Sox greats such as Ted Williams, Carl Yastrzemski, Carlton Fisk, and more. Then climb the steps to the infamous Green Monster, visit Pesky’s Pole, and experience the nostalgia in this historic park.

3.      See Priceless Works of Art.

The Museum of Fine Arts in Boston (locally referred to as The MFA) is rated the #1 thing to do in Boston on TripAdvisor.com. And if you’ve visited the MFA, it’s not hard to see why.  Priceless pieces from artists including Van Gogh, Renoir, Monet, Rembrandt, Sargent, and more draw millions of visitors to this attraction each year. The MFA’s collection also includes art from across the globe, including pieces from Greek, Egyptian, Chinese, and other ancient civilizations. Make a day of it by visiting the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, across the street from the MFA, which also hosts a very impressive art collection. If your name is Isabella, you can tour that museum for free!

4.      Eat Italian Food in the North End.

Boston’s North End is the historic city’s “Little Italy,” and has the best Italian cuisine on this side of the Atlantic. Stop for lunch or dinner between Freedom Trail stops like Old North Church and Paul Revere’s House, which are both nestled in the historic North End. There are so many Italian restaurants, in addition to Italian bakeries where you can stop for dessert (if you’re not full enough already!).  Just be aware that some of the North End’s restaurants require reservations because space is limited. Be sure to plan ahead!

5.      Do a Running Tour.

Kill two birds with one stone by getting your daily run in while seeing some of Boston’s most famous sights!  Running tours of Boston are very popular right now. It’s a fun way to keep to your workout routine while touring the cradle of the country. Check out Boston running tours here.  There are also biking tours if you brought your bike along with you on contract!

6.      Bring a Picnic to Boston’s Public Garden.

Boston’s Public Garden is especially beautiful in the spring and summer, with flowers and trees in full bloom. It’s a great place to bring a picnic and enjoy the scenery. Here you can opt to ride the famous Swan Boats, feed the ducks, or visit the bench where this famous scene in Good Will Hunting between Matt Damon and Robin Williams was filmed.

7.      Take Your Kids to the Children’s Museum.

Got kids? They will love the Children’s Museum! This museum has many innovative and interactive activities for kids of all ages, including a bubble room, construction zone, art studio, “investigate” science room, theater, and so much more.

8.      Tour Boston’s Craft Breweries.

If you enjoy trying different beers, there are many craft breweries in Boston that offer tours and tastings. Samuel Adams is probably the most well known, but it’s also worth checking out Harpoon Brewery, Cambridge Brewing Company, Idle Hands Craft Brewery, Mystic Brewery, and more. If you want to make a day of it, check out Boston Brew Tours.

9.      Go on a Whale Watch.

Did you know that Massachusetts is one of the top 10 whale-watching spots in the world? Embark on a Boston Harbor Cruise to try to catch glimpses of humpbacks, finbacks, minkes, pilot whales, and even the endangered right whales. Whale sightings are guaranteed on these particular tours, so if you see none on your trip, you’ll receive a free ticket for a future whale watch.

10. Relive History at the Boston Tea Party Ships & Museum.

The Boston Tea Party Ships & Museum not only allow you to learn about  history, you can experience it through reenacting one of the most important events leading up to the American Revolution, the Boston Tea Party! Throw boxes of tea overboard just like the Sons of Liberty did more than 230 years ago and tour the museum’s virtual exhibits to learn more about the people and events that led up to the American Revolution.
