Locum tenens positions are available in just about every specialty, but there are a few that we place more often than others. If you're looking for your next locum contract and happen to experienced in one of these areas, your skill set is in high demand.

Hospitalist

A hospitalist is a dedicated in-patient physician who works exclusively in a hospital. In addition to treating acutely ill patients, hospitalist physicians help the facility run smoothly by facilitating transfer of patient care to different departments within the hospital and even assist with the process of transferring care out of the facility when a patient is discharged.

Hospitalist positions are very common in locum tenens work, because hospitals need to keep a certain staffing level in order to provide proper patient care. These positions are great opportunities for locum doctors to experience a wide variety of patient conditions and health issues, as well as a variety of facilities and locations.

Internal Medicine

Internal medicine physicians are specialists who focus on the diagnosis, treatment, and care of adults across a wide spectrum of health—from preventative care to treating serious illnesses. Internists may act as primary care physicians, but the positions are different from family or general practitioners.

Internal medicine physicians, or internists, may practice in a variety of settings—where hospitalists work specifically in hospitals—making these positions perfect for locum tenens doctors looking to expand their horizons.

Family Medicine

Family medicine physicians are doctors dedicated to treating patients of all ages.  According to the American Academy of Family Physicians, "family physicians provide the majority of care for America’s underserved rural and urban populations."

Because family physicians are so often the source of primary care for patients in many different areas, there are almost always positions available for qualified and dedicated locum tenens doctors in this specialty. These positions are ideal for physicians who are experienced in family medicine or have a variety of experience treating different age groups.

Emergency Medicine

Obviously, emergency departments need to be fully staffed at all times, meaning that locum tenens doctors with emergency medicine experience are never without opportunities.  Physicians who work in hospital emergency departments see and treat patients with everything from heart attacks and strokes to lacerations and bone breaks. It's a very different world of medicine, but one that many doctors feel the need to experience at least for a short amount of time.
