6 Tips for Finding Success Working Locum Tenens

Considering a career as a traveling physician? You'll likely work through many questions when deciding whether or not working locum tenens is the right path for you: Can I make a successful career out of this? Am I cut out for this kind of work? What tools do I need to do well?

And while there are many positives (control over schedule, ability to travel, less likely chance of burnout), it can be quite different from traditional practice. Here are six tips that will help you find (and keep) success working locum tenens.

1. Be Adaptable

Locums regularly deal with new locations, new workplaces, and new processes. By exercising adaptability and keeping the bigger picture in mind, the transition can be much easier. Establishing comfort in a new environment is an essential step in creating success, so don't be afraid to ask questions and be open to new perspectives.

2. Be Flexible

Flexibility is similar to adaptability, but applies more to your day-to-day duties. Not every site will be the same, so locum physicians must learn to work with the tools or resources they have available. By being well-versed in different processes, and willing to accept change, locums can ease more seamlessly into a new workplace.

3. Stay Confident

Some locums say they experience isolation in new locations. To build self-esteem and stay motivated locums should work to make local friends and acquaintances, and remember to trust in their abilities and career path. Successful locums must rely on their inner resources, as locum can be very independent work.

4. Maintain an Open Mind

There will be transitions between work places; sometimes minor and sometimes major. While things may be different from your previous assignment, that isn’t necessarily a bad thing. In fact, the opportunity to challenge yourself in new environments can do wonders for your professional development.

5. Become Part of the Community

While your time at a certain location may be temporary, you are a source of information and comfort for local patients. You’ll do yourself a favor by getting to know your patients, the community, and the things they care about. This will only strengthen your rapport with both your patients and your collegues.

6. Show Your Passion

This one is the same no matter where your locum placement is: passion for patient care. By emphasizing this to your employers, and the patients themselves, you’re building a track record for genuine patient relationships and employer trust. And isn’t this what you’re in this business for? We think so!
